3.3 Creating a Sitemap
Prerequisites
Before you start:
- A live website (Phase 2)
Step-by-Step
Check if you already have one
Visit yourdomain.com.au/sitemap.xml. Squarespace, WordPress with Yoast, and most platforms generate one automatically.
Install a plugin if needed
WordPress without Yoast: install Yoast SEO or RankMath. Both generate sitemaps automatically.
Submit to search engines
If not already done in Sections 3.1–3.2, submit to both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Broken sitemap URL — verify it loads as XML, not an error page
- Including noindex pages — your sitemap should only list pages you want indexed
Pro Tip
Check your sitemap after every major site change. New pages should appear automatically, but verify.
You're Done When
- Sitemap accessible at /sitemap.xml
- Submitted to Google and Bing
- Contains all your important pages
