4.2 Google Reviews Strategy

Why Reviews Are the Keystone

Reviews sit at the intersection of almost every part of your digital presence:

  • Local rankings: Reviews account for ~14% of local ranking factors (Whitespark 2026). Volume, recency, velocity, and response rate all matter.
  • Click-through rates: Listings with star ratings get 35% more clicks in search results.
  • Conversion rates: The sweet spot for star ratings is 4.5--4.8. A perfect 5.0 actually converts comparably to a 3.5 -- people don't trust perfection.
  • Ad performance: Google Ads with seller ratings (from reviews) see 17% higher click-through rates.
  • AI citations: AI search engines reference review data when recommending businesses. More reviews with specific details = more likely to be cited.
  • Trust: 79% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations (BrightLocal 2026 Consumer Review Survey).

Reviews create a flywheel: more reviews --> higher local ranking --> more visibility --> more customers --> more reviews. The businesses that start this loop earliest build an advantage that's very hard to catch.

Step-by-Step

Get and shorten your review link

GBP dashboard > Get more reviews. Shorten with bit.ly or yourbusiness.com.au/review. Long Google links look suspicious in SMS.

Ask your first 5 customers directly

Phone, text, or in-person. Send the link immediately. Most people are happy to help if asked.

Create your review request messages

Write three versions: SMS (under 160 chars), email (3--4 sentences), in-person script. All should thank them, reference the job, ask directly, include the link.

Define your trigger event

Best time: immediately after job completion or positive feedback. Build the ask into your booking system's post-appointment email or your invoice template.

Set up one follow-up

If no review within 5 days, send one follow-up via a different channel. One follow-up only.

Respond to every review

Positive: thank by name, reference the service. Negative: acknowledge, don't argue, offer to resolve offline.

Track monthly

Note count on 1st of each month. Goal: 3--5 new reviews/month. 20+ reviews with 4.5+ stars = star ratings in search.
